MEMBER BIO:

Carey is a California native with a strong respect for the outdoors and decades of experience exploring the West. Her love of travel and driving sparked frequent adventures exploring “side roads and dirt roads,” with increasing distances – and terrain challenges – testing the limits of her vehicles. Carey’s traveling family includes two teen kids, two border collies, and a trusty adventure cat named Forest who joined the family as a feral kitten while camping on the east side of the Sierras.

Carey’s Subaru Outback has proven capable, comfortable, and reliable: a complete package on wheels, whether for mom duties, house projects, long drives, or off-road exploring. Over the years, cosmetic and functional upgrades were added to accommodate increasingly challenging off-road adventures while maintaining a more rugged appearance.

Carey’s recent adventures are farther north in Montana, where her husband Todd studied Forestry at University of Montana. Complementing the Subaru, their Ram 1500 Ecodiesel tows an off-road SoCal Krawler Teardrop equipped with a Tepui RTT and sleeping for six, an agile overlanding setup that frequently crosses the continental divide on dirt. Last fall, they bought their dream home, a remote off-grid log cabin on the Canadian border with panoramic views of Glacier National Park in a tight knit homesteading community. They plan to use this property as a launch pad for even more remote adventures into the wilderness.

Carey has a degree Environmental Studies & Planning, and has worked 24 years in the public sector, managing projects ranging from improving non-motorized access, reducing community flooding while enhancing suburban riparian habitat, and serving as a Disaster Service Worker during the North Bay Fires and the coronavirus pandemic. When she’s not working, spending time with her family or adventuring, she also serves on several advisory boards and committees related to transportation and disaster planning.
