Hey Adventurers!

I thought I would chime in on what's been going on in my world, or rather What I've been up to in the past month and it wasn't an easy row to hoe. 🤣

About a month ago, my Jeep JKU, Shadowfax started making this hellish noise coming from the DS rear wheel. So, I drove it to the Northwest Overland creative shop in Gig Harbor, WA. and began tearing into the problem...

Axle bearing and seal failure and differential oil puking out everywhere!

Now understand, I am supposed to be leaving on a trip to Moab on May 20th and this happens. So it was all hands on deck to get this sorted in a very short period of time. All hands meaning both of my hands 😎

Next step was to start tear into the axle and try to evaluate the extent of the damage.

Suffice to say, it was FUGLY....

Now since this was an absolute necessity to replace, I figured while I am in these working on the axle, lets address the control arm Heim joint woes and they were in sad shape.

Super corroded and sloppy AF!

So, let's fix that!

So, I did. And it was all coming together when I realized it was a decision time to consider changing out the stock axles to an upgraded chrome moly axle. So, I executed that as well. Out with the 140K mile old stock axles in with the G2 chrome moly axles!

Now time for assembly. New bearing retainer, axle seal, bearing and bearing collar!

Next up, new replacement parking brake assembly, because at 140+K miles, these were tired...

Last leg, new brake pads and rotors, just because...

Finally! New ARB rear differential cover and differential oil to wrap it all up!

Test drive complete and seems very solid! Now, about that Moab trip... 🤔

Driveway Queen back on here throne!

Until the next adventure! Stay safe everyone and go venture out!!

Thanks for sharing Dan. This is the kind of posts I enjoy as a DIY mechanic myself. I am planning to buy a Jeep in my near future, I may have to pick your brain on occasion as to what is a good year and model to get into. Glad you got that addressed before getting into the field again!
