Hi all!

Just jointed the team.  Looking forward to the community and exchange of information about camping/hiking/overlanding, etc.

I just got a 2020 Subaru Outback and hoping to get my wife to actually do some car camping with me (she's not much for tents 🤣 ).  Had a lift, tires/wheels and armor installed on the Outback and ready to start heading out there.  Prior to the Subaru I had a 2009 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited.  Went all over AZ with the family in that Jeep.  Really loved it but looking for some easier trails with more hiking and camping with my wife, now that my kids are adults and moving on.

I am happy to be apart of 4XPEDITION!  Can't wait to start talking with you all!!

Best.

Pete

Hi, Pete. Welcome!

Nice setup with your Subaru Outback. I have a stock 2019 Subaru Crosstrek outfitted with a Rooftop Tent to solve the ground tent problem. I’m just down the road from you in Casa Grande, and would be happy to show your wife what that option looks like if she’s interested.

Cheers!

Thanks, Debra.  That might be an option down the road for sure.  Do you have the tent on your stock roof rack?  I definitely want to get a new roof rack so I can add more weight up there.  Thinking about the Prinsu that Scott put on his Subaru.  That looks like a ton of effort though.  Who knows!!

Best,

Pete

Hey Pete, nice to meet you and welcome! Next step for me as well will be a roof rack and I'm thinking the Prinsu or Front Runner set up.  Prinsu is an in-depth install but that might be something Black Label Garage can get done for you.  I'm still on the fence about which way to lean though.

@luke-moussa I just talked to my buddy Dan Cronin, founder of Northwest Overland. He has a fabrication shop. I am thinking about designing my own rack. Not sure when something would be ready but I think I have a good idea.

Hey Luke - Nice to meet you as well.  I actually wanted the Front Runner set up and purchased it only to find out that it would not work with the 2020 Outback (even though the site said it would).  I was completely bummed.  That rack is much less invasive for sure and can carry the load of a rooftop tent.  Oh well.  Front Runner did say they were working on a prototype for the 2020 but did not know when it would be available.  Like you, I'm not sure what to do at this point.  Right now I have the Yakima basket and that will suffice for a while.  Plan on throwing my spare up there when camping so I can utilize the back of the Outback with the Luno Life mattress.

@4x_admin that's exciting! Will it incorporate the factory rails or delete them?

@pete-racz that's a bummer...I know what that feeling is like 😑 .  But maybe a sign from the universe that something more magical is in store for you 😀.

@luke-moussa Incorporating them. Removing them is too much of a pain.

@pete-racz My RTT is mounted to a set of Malone 50” crossbars, which were recommended by Roofnest. They attach to the factory rails and sit up just high enough to allow enough clearance for wrenching on the lock nuts, and they support more weight than the stock crossbars. Another bonus to these crossbars is that they are pretty inexpensive. I’m very happy with their performance.

Awesome!  Thanks, Debra.  I will look into those crossbars.  Problem with the 2020 Outback is that it was a complete redesign.  So, many of the aftermarket accessories don't seem to work with it.  Maybe these will though!

Thanks again!

That is good to know Pete when I start to look at a custom-designed roof rack I am thinking of.
