I was looking at the extinguishers offered by H3R Performance as I like the idea of not making a mess, but still being able to put out a fire.  They offer an under seat mount that from what softroadingthewest YoutTube channel states does not fit his Subaru well.

Anyone have suggestions on extinguisher mounts that they have used in their Subaru.  I like the ides of under my legs on driver seat as I would typically have my legs out driving vs. the passenger side.  Open to other mounting ideas as well.

H3R Performance is just one option, open to others as well if they offer the no mess style extinguishers.

Thanks,

Rich

Interested to hear what people have to say about this as well, Richard.  Not sure where to put one in my Outback.  Thanks for posting!

Hey Rich! So I am not in favor of fire extinguishers mounted on a MOLLE bracing under the front of the front seat. I was driving a MILSPEC Hummer across North Fort Hood with a fire extinguisher mounted there and I hit some rough terrain. Not too rough but enough to jostle everyone in the Hummer. Somehow my co-driver kicked the handle and it broke the safety restraint and suddenly the cabin was flooded with dry-type fire suppressant. Not what you want to have happen. There was shit everywhere and it took us forever to clean out that cabin, our gear, and our weapons.

Now mounted behind the front seat, or in a MOLLE system that covers the rear 3/4 window, I’m thinking about getting that myself. I linked to the ADF website that sells them. Hope this helps!

Hi Matt,

That's why I was thinking the drivers side as we would be keeping our feet on the pedals/forward and if mounted in such a way to prevent the heel from kicking and starting the release...  Also that's why I liked the H3R Performance that uses what they call HalGuard,

"H3R Performance brings aviation grade Halotron® 1 fire extinguishers to the automotive enthusiast with HalGuard™ premium clean agent fire protection. HalGuard™ is no ordinary automotive fire extinguisher. It contains Halotron® 1, an electrically non-conductive "clean" extinguishing agent that rapidly turns into a gas. Halotron® 1 has passed extensive testing by Underwriters Laboratories, and meets FAA requirements. It can be found on commercial aircraft, and is used by airport fire fighters."

A no mess alternative to covering you engine, or interior, with traditional extinguisher chemicals.

Also, if needed, I wouldn't have to jump out of the car and wait for my electric rear hatch to open so that I could get to it.  I don't like the idea of putting it where it could be in the wat of my rear passengers.

I have a Subaru Outback and am not planning on rock crawling or high speed off roading.  I hit rough bumpy terrain in that think I better be going slow and steady or turn around and get a jeep... 😉

@rich this is good stuff.  Thanks for posting this thread.  I've been experimenting with places to mount an extinguisher and other than using that ADF MOLLE option Matt mentioned, all other options seem to be in the way of someone's foot.  But then if in the cargo area it would eat up space and risk getting jostled there or more difficult to get to in a pinch (like you mentioned) - I also need to learn how to pack better but that's a me issue.  Either way I'm going to check out the H3R Performance extinguisher 👍 👍

Yea, I understand the "in the way" issue.  But having it available quickly in an emergency I guess is one of my thoughts.  There are two emergency conditions I could see occurring.

One is you are where you want to be, camp is setup or your walking around outside the vehicle and something happens at camp and you need to get to extinguisher fast.  I could see opening the rear hatch and reaching in and they do make quick pull away release mounts for this.  I can see my self cursing at the electric door I have on my touring opening at what would seem like slow motion in an emergency...

The second emergency is your driving along and your vehicle or someone else's has a fire.  Here is where I could see reaching quickly in front of my driver seat, grabbing the extinguisher and trying to take care of the fire fast.  If I have to jump out, run around back, press my hatch button, dance back and forth on my feet while it opens itself in slow motion, then fight my packed rear cargo area to get to an extinguisher that's mounted to a molle on a window or somewhere else....

I don't think that there's a perfect location or answer.  One might say the back seat area... I guess if I'm not having anyone sit there I could remove it from any mount in the rear or place a second unit on the floor held in place by gear that I could open back door and grab it quickly and when at camp leave it there or move it to another location.

I've seen mounts designed to place the extinguisher under the front of the drivers seat.  I think eventually I'll try this first and if I find myself flexing my legs and kicking it, I'll move it to behind the drivers seat.

To be clear, I have a Subaru Outback and I only intend on what I guess would be called soft roading?  Not planning on rock crawling or any high speed bouncing around off road activity.  The kind of amazing expeditions Scott has taken his Outback on.  If there is any "rough" areas, it will be a slow and steady approach to getting through...

Also I'm a Neophyte to this and haven't even gone on my first off road / soft roading adventure.  Located in San Jose, CA I can head north or south, so I have some research to do... BUT that's for another thread I'll probably start soon...

@rich totally agree with the emergency situations and the tailgate opening at the speed of molasses.  What about getting one of those nifty seat back cover super apron thingys with all the pockets and hooks and other dust collectors.  Maybe just give the extinguisher a home in one of those pockets? https://www.autoguide.com/top-10-best-car-seat-organizers
