In the past, self-reliance was about hunting, gathering, planting and nurturing a crop and so on in order to sustain our existence. In today’s world, we have the ability to utilize technology to create streams of income with which we can purchase the things we need to sustain us.

I have spent a great deal of my career as a self-employed professional. I have also held senior corporate positions in a variety of roles with corporations. I can safely report that there are pros and cons to either path–employed or self-employed.

On one hand, employment can offer a sense of stability and on another that stability can evaporate with a decision out of your control. We become dependent on our employer for our sustainability and that employment can change on a dime. With employment, we also become dependent on a continual stream of income dictated by someone else and we often leverage our paycheck on the things we want and need. We agree to monthly payments for things because we believe our paychecks will continue to flow.

Self-employment can also be unpredictable but offers a level of freedom and self-reliance that is uncomparible to being employed. We put ourselves in control of the streams of revenue we receive and we are much less likely to leverage ourselves with debt the way we often do with employment income.

At the end of the day, I am a major proponent of being self-sufficient. That generally comes from being self-employed and making your own decisions, setting your own hours, and guiding your own course to success. It’s a very freeing experience and one that offers self-reliance in our modern world.

The challenge for most people who long for the freedom and flexibility of self-employment is the fear around how to do it, where to start, and what to even pursue.
