So stage 1 of my DIY rack is almost done! M.O.R.F.E.A.S., pronounced “Morpheus” or “Morphy-Ass” however you want I don’t mind, is my Modular Overland Rack For Equipment And Stuff (trademark. Is that how it works? I don’t know, but you read it here first).

I bought about 30’ of shallow strut, about 20 3/8” spring nuts (or channel lock nuts, strut nuts), 8 2” long 3/8” bolts, and either 8 or 10 1” long 3/8” bolts, and about 20 3/8” lock nuts.

I cut down my long pieces to about 74”, and those will run the length of my roof so I can attach my Auxbeam 42” light bar and provide a mounting surface for the 56” top cross beams. Those top cross beams are cut to be wider than the body of Marge (my Outback) to give me enough room to attach my Yakima Loadwarrior rack and kayak racks. Then I cut two 46” pieces that will go beneath my factory cross bars and serve as anchor points for everything above. If it sounds a little convoluted, it’s cool, I’m just making it up as I go.

But I got everything cut down and mostly painted. Mainly I wanted to get the name out there. MORFEAS. Anyways, I’ll post more when I get it mounted up.

I am thinking of custom fabricating my own roof rack for the Outback. The Prinsu rack is a total pain to install. The Front Runner Rack in my opinion isn't ideal for loading a rooftop tent. I think I can do better. Reached out to my buddy Dan Cronin from Northwest Overland who has his own fabrication shop in his garage. I may fly up there this spring and see what we can create together. He said he would be interested in partnering on it. @pete-racz @luke-moussa @debaru Thoughts?
